A job description for a group of incumbents can be defined as the set of values which represent the percentage of time spent (PTS) by the group on each task and the percentage of members who perform (PMP) each task (Archer, 1966). There are three programs which calculate job descriptions - GRPJOB, STGJOB, and JOBTYP.
Both JOBTYP and STGJOB can only be run after clustering has been accomplished. The created PTS and PMP factors will have element names of STnnnn, where nnnn is the stage number. JOBTYP computes the job descriptions for all stages it selects as potential job types. Although JOBTYP does not automatically print the selected job descriptions, it can automatically run a CORTAS to compare and contrast the selected groups (See Job Typing). STGJOB will compute and optionally generate an automatic print of job descriptions for any user-specified stages in a cluster solution. All printing of job descriptions is done by PRTJOB.
MEMSEL creates the membership masks that are used by GRPJOB for computing job descriptions. The user defines the conditions that must be met in order for a case to be included in a group in the MEMSEL runstream. There is great flexibility in defining conditions. Any previously defined groups, as well as any computed, background, or task variables, can be used in creating the selection criteria. In addition, the presentation sequence (or KPATH numbers) can be utilized if clustering has been performed. MEMSEL can also generate an automatic run of GRPJOB and PRTJOB for any of the groups it creates. This automatic generation option is recommended, as it saves time and effort if those products are ever required.
GRPJOB creates PTS and PMP task factors with element names of GPnnnn, where nnnn is the next available GP group number. The user should be certain to supply descriptive titles for each job description for easier identification.
has many available options for reporting job descriptions. It can print task level, duty level, and task-within-duty level reports. Duty reports display the number of tasks in the duty, the average percent time spent by all members, and the cumulative percent time spent by all members. Task-level and task-within-duty-level reports list PMP, average PTS by members performing, average PTS by all members, and cumulative PTS by all members for each task. The user may specify the sort sequences, and can restrict report size based on the number of tasks and/or the cumulative PTS value.
